Hungary Warns of Greek-Style Crisis

“Fundamentally, Hungary’s economy is nowhere near the debt level of Greece, and it has more than enough money to service its debt, while I don’t think there is a data integrity problem,” he said. “But the government has shown itself to be a bunch of bunglers and amateurs when it comes to communicating with financial markets, and it will now face a challenge to convince the markets that Hungary is heading in the right direction.”

Hungary seeks to reassure investors

Next, the prime minister said through a spokesman that he supported the view that Hungary had only a slim chance of avoiding a Greek-style debt crisis, but that his government would act swiftly to avoid the Greek path.

This shocked financial markets on Friday and was seen as one of the reasons the euro fell to four-year lows, the Hungarian forint fell around five per cent and the Budapest Stock Exchange ended 3.3 per cent lower.

Hungary's Economic Woes Punish Euro

Mr. Szijjarto said at a news conference that Hungary's new government is "ready to avert the Greek road," but he added that "there is nobody in the country apart from the previous government who still says the budget deficit of 3.8% of gross domestic product can be reached." That is the IMF's target for this year.

His remarks exacerbated fears in financial markets, where investors worried that the new government could soon announce worse news from Hungary's treasury. Fidesz is planning a state-of-the-budget announcement over the weekend.

"You simply cannot talk like this in these markets," said Timothy Ash, head of emerging-market research at Royal Bank of Scotland.

European Cybercriminals Open Letter

The European Cybercriminals Society (ECS) wishes to thank the European Commission for its recently published draft Directive on Child Exploitation.
...
In this context, we would like to draw your attention to the possible creation of a potential barrier to the single market. The United Kingdom will not only block websites accused of infringements of intellectual property, but also provide public information about the sites that it has blocked. This will give sites popular in the UK an unfair competitive advantage over other sites as it is quite clear that only the most interesting sites will be blocked. This is nothing less than state-sponsored advertising those sites to young people who are generally well able to circumvent blocking systems. Such state-sponsored support for certain illegal websites popular in one Member State is clearly unfair and a barrier to the single market for crime. We therefore urge the European Commission to introduce similar rules on an EU level as soon as possible, so that all European cybercriminals can obtain the same advantages.
